Moscow Accuses West of Plotting to Expel Russia from Armenia

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement on Friday, March 5, alleging that Washington and Brussels are actively pursuing Armenia’s exit from both the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

The statement expressed concern over what it termed as “ephemeral promises” made by Western powers, suggesting their objective is to encourage Armenia to withdraw from these alliances and also to remove the Russian military base and border guards from Armenia.

Highlighting the significance of Armenia’s partnership with Moscow and its involvement in the EAEU and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized the substantial benefits Armenia receives from these collaborations, which it claimed far outweigh any grant support offered by Brussels.

Earlier statements from the Foreign Ministry had accused the West of attempting to manipulate Armenia to serve its “extremely dangerous” agendas in the South Caucasus region.

In March, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan declared that Yerevan had “frozen” its participation in the CSTO. He clarified that while Yerevan lacks a permanent representative in the CSTO and doesn’t engage in its highest-level negotiations, it refrains from obstructing decisions made within the organization.
