U.S. “Particularly Pleased” with Decision to Deploy EU Mission in Armenia

The United States believes an EU mission which is set to be deployed on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border has the potential to build confidence between the two sides, Department of State Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel told a press briefing on Friday, October 7.

The decision to deploy a mission was reached at a meeting between the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan, France and the European Union in Prague on Thursday, October 6.

“We are encouraged by the meeting of the president and prime minister of Armenia and Azerbaijan, and we welcome the efforts of [French] President [Emmanuel] Macron and European Council President [Charles] Michel to build momentum behind a comprehensive peace process,” Patel said.

“And we are particularly pleased with progress on an EU observer mission to the region, and this mission has the potential to build confidence between both sides and continues to bolster negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.”
