Turkey Angered by Mexico’s Recognition of Armenian Genocide

Turkey on Thursday, February 9 slammed a Mexican Senate resolution on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, Anadolu Agency reports.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry described the recognition as an “invalid attempt to rewrite history”.

Turkey reacts the same way every time a foreign government or parliament recognizes the Genocide.

The Mexican Senate on Wednesday adopted a document recognizing the Armenian Genocide, highlighting the importance of respect for universal human rights.

At the same time, the Senate urges the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to promote the official recognition of the Armenian Genocide by Mexico.

On April 24, 1915, a large group of Armenian intellectuals was rounded up and assassinated in Constantinople by the Ottoman government. On April 24, 2023, Armenians worldwide will commemorate the 108th anniversary of the Genocide which continued until 1923. Some three dozen countries, hundreds of local government bodies and international organizations have so far recognized the killings of 1.5 million Armenians as Genocide. Turkey denies to this day.
