Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has once again called for the creation of a land corridor through Armenia linking Azerbaijan to its Nakhichevan exclave and on to Turkey.
Speaking after a visit to Azerbaijan, Erdogan called the proposed “Zangezur Corridor” a vital connection not only for Azerbaijan but for expanding Turkish influence across the region. He claimed it would bolster the Caucasus’ transport and energy infrastructure and urged Iran to support the plan.
However, Iran remains firmly opposed. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has previously warned that the corridor would harm Armenia’s interests. Iran’s defense minister, visiting Armenia last week, reaffirmed Tehran’s stance, saying Iran “will not allow any encroachment” on the Armenia-Iran border.
