Azerbaijan Claims Drones From Iran Hit Nakhchivan Airport Area

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry said two drones were launched “from the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran” into the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic around midday on Thursday, March 5, striking near civilian infrastructure and injuring two people.

In its statement, the ministry said one drone hit the terminal building of Nakhchivan’s airport, while a second fell near a school building in the village of Shakarabad, causing damage to the airport facility and leaving two civilians wounded.

Baku condemned what it described as an attack on Azerbaijani territory and demanded that Tehran provide a prompt explanation, open an investigation, and take steps to prevent repeat incidents. The ministry also said Azerbaijan “reserves the right” to take unspecified response measures.

As the diplomatic response escalated, Azerbaijan said it summoned Iran’s ambassador, Mojtaba Demirchilou, to receive a formal protest and a note of protest.

Independent verification of the origin of the drones was not immediately available. Reuters, citing a source close to the Azerbaijani government, reported that missiles and drones coming “from the direction of Iran” landed on the grounds of Nakhchivan International Airport, near the Iranian border.
