The Journal of International Media & Entertainment Law at Southwestern Law School, in association with the Armenian Bar Association, will hold an international symposium in Rome on May 25-26, 2027, examining the role of disinformation and propaganda in armed conflicts across the South Caucasus, Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
The symposium, to be held at the Italian Parliament and other venues in Rome, will focus on both traditional and technology-assisted information warfare, with particular attention to conflicts including Artsakh, Ukraine and other unresolved or recurring conflicts of the former Soviet space.
Organizers have issued a call for papers inviting scholars to submit proposals for full-length law review articles addressing the use of propaganda, misinformation and emerging technologies in warfare.
Among the areas of particular interest are state-run information apparatuses, the use of artificial intelligence and social media in armed conflict, foreign information manipulation and interference, regulation of foreign disinformation, and the role of religion, history and culture in shaping false or manipulated narratives.
For the Armenian community, the symposium is especially significant given the extensive use of state-sponsored propaganda and information warfare surrounding Azerbaijan’s military campaigns against Artsakh and the forced displacement of its Armenian population. The conference will provide an academic and legal forum for examining how such narratives are created, amplified and legitimized through government institutions, media networks and emerging technologies.
Articles selected for the symposium will undergo peer review for publication in the Journal of International Media & Entertainment Law. Scholars offered publication may also qualify for pre-approved airfare and hotel reimbursement.
Interested scholars must submit an abstract and curriculum vitae to JIMEL@swlaw.edu by November 15, 2026.
Some submissions may also be selected for a separate U.S.-based conference.
